DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Advisor, the Laboratory Technologist will perform various technical lab and administrative duties in support of ash testing, sampling and handling, performance monitoring and reporting on plant efficiency. This will include sample collection, preparation and analysis, minor maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, and the development of lab and QA/QC procedures and programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures ash quality by collecting, preparing and analyzing ash samples and testing for moisture, Loss on Ignition, specific gravity, fineness, strength, etc., on a daily basis as per (ASTM and CSA) guidelines.
  • Monitoring plant performance and assist with operational improvements as required.
  • Monitor, maintain and calibrate monitoring equipment including analyzers and meters.
  • Labeling of all chemicals in accordance with WHMIS standards.
  • Assist with the development and administration of the site QA/QC program.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in chemistry or material management and ash analysis along with reporting is preferred.
  • Experience with instruments and analytical equipment.
  • Experience in field sampling.
  • Competency with Microsoft Word and Excel.  Experience in data handling programs is an asset.
  • The successful candidate will have well developed interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical and decision-making abilities and must be able to work independently as well as in teams. 
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships internally as well as externally.
  • Compliance with all applicable legislation and standards e.g. OH&S, WHMIS, etc.
 

EDUCATION

  • A Diploma or Degree related to Chemistry or related discipline.
